Whenever you share an opinion or belief, some people argue, tell you that you are wrong or judge your character. Sometimes they give a reason; other times they simply dismiss you. You start doubting yourself, but you also do not want to become someone who refuses to learn. How can you tell whether your view is reasonable without needing everyone to approve of it?
Your manager calls without warning in the evenings, at weekends and even during your holiday. Sometimes they shout or blame you before you can explain. Even on days when nobody calls, you keep checking your phone and worry about what might happen if you miss it. You struggle to enjoy time with family, feel tense when your phone rings and find it difficult to switch off. Someone says, 'It is only a short phone call. Why let it spoil your whole day?'

Build solid speaking skills, wherever you start
No one to practise with? Not much chance to talk? Whether English is your first language or an additional language, a quiet routine can leave you with few opportunities to put your thoughts into words. Knowing what you want to say is not always the same as being able to say it clearly.
The Spekero app gives you speaking exercises you can practise privately, at your own pace, without waiting for a conversation partner. Use the app on iPhone or Android to build a regular speaking habit, repeat exercises and listen back after each exercise.
For English learners and second-language speakers
- No English-speaking practice partner? Make time to speak out loud, even when people around you are busy or do not speak English.
- Understand English but cannot find the words? Practise using the vocabulary you know in your own spoken answers.
- Translate in your head or struggle to build sentences? Work on putting ideas into complete sentences and connecting them clearly.
- Hesitate because you worry about mistakes? Rehearse everyday conversations, work topics and speaking-test answers privately, with room to pause and try again.
For native English speakers
- Spend much of the day without talking? Create a regular opportunity to practise expressing yourself, even when conversation is limited.
- Know what you mean but struggle to explain it? Practise organising your thoughts, making a clear point and adding a useful example.
- Search for words, go blank or start rambling? Rehearse short responses and give yourself time to find the wording you want.
- Find meetings or difficult conversations challenging? Practise explaining an idea, responding thoughtfully and choosing a tone that fits the situation.
